After Christmas(Posted: 2010-12-27)

The week after Christmas could have saw the tigers in action against 12 different teams from at least four different States. The week got off to a good start with at Tri-Match at Buckhorn. Grissom defeated Deshler 72-6 and Buckhorn 50-13 on the eve of the Buckhorn Battlefeild Duals.

At the Battlefeild Duals, the Tigers won their pool defeating Sparkman (60-19), Antioch High from Nashville (51-24), Pell City (52-21), and Ravenwood of Brentwood TN (35-34). The Ravenwood match finished in a 34-34 tie which was broken on the first criteria of Grissom winning more head to head matches 8-6. Grissom faced the winner of the other pool, Bremen High out of Bremen GA. Bremen jumped out to a 13-0 lead before the Tiger's Killian Hoyt won 3-0 at 152. The Tigers would claw their way to a narrow 28-23 lead going into the final two matches. Knowing they would forfeit the last match at 130, the Tigers desparately needed a win at 125. Alas, it was not to be as Bremen took that match and the forfeit to a 35-28 win, sending the Tigers home with second place.

The Tigers got a good nights sleep before heading to Louisville, KY the next afternoon for the Valley High School Duals. This was a one day duals tournament. Grissom tore through their pool defeating Boone County (73-6), Bullit East (76-6), and host, Valley High (84-0). This sent Grissom to the semi-finals against Fairdale High. The Tigers dispatch them 56-19 and then defeated the defending champions, North Oldham, 46-24.

Atl Road Trip(Posted: 2010-12-21)

The Tigers started their Christmas break with a road trip. First the team travelled south to Birmingham to dual the Thompson Warriors at Sanford Universtiy. The Mat Warriors were well prepared for Grissom, prevailing 32 to 25. The afternoon started with 5 exhibition matches. Grissom won three of these: David Foster, Jake Griffin, and Dexter Thompson were all three victorious. The main dual started well for the Tigers with JD Henderson scoring a major decision at 103. Thompson then went on a four match winning streak that included one pin and one major. The Tigers managed two wins when David Baumohl won a close match at 135 (4-3) and Troy McMillian followed up with an 8-6 win at 140. Grissom would drop three more matches including a tech fall before Benny Bradford (171) and Brian Walker (189) would pick up a pair of pins. The teams split the final two matches with Thompson scoring a pin at 215 before Bobby Brown would close out the match with at 2-0 win at 285.

As soon as the match was over, Grissom boarded the bus and headed east to Douglasville GA for the South Paulding Spartan Super Duals. The Tigers would see action in seven duals over a two day period. The first day of action saw the Tigers cruise through their competition by defeating Sanoraville (44-29), East Paulding (51-12), Woodlawn (57-12), and Woodland (41-28). The second day of competition began by concluding pool wrestling. Grissom scored a victory over Effingham County (48-25) before dropping the final pool match to North Gwinnett (28-34). The Tigers faced a strong West Laurens team in the consolation finals. It was a tough back and forth dual with grissom winning two matches, then West Laurens winning two, then Grissom winning one, loosing one, and winning one, then West Laurens winning two and Grissom winning two and West Laurens winning two more to take a 31-28 lead going into the final match of the week. Bobby Brown pulled out a stunning win with a pin that put Grissom out front 34-31!

The win over West Laurens gave the Tigers Third Place in the Super Duals.

Panther Inv(Posted: 2010-12-11)

The Tigers competed in the Pelham Panther Invitational. The tournament format was a 'scramble' which was new for most of our wrestlers. The first day of the tournament consisted of round robin pools. The second day had the pool winner paired up for a bracketed type of tournament. The winners of the 4 pools would face each other for 1st through 4th place. The runner-ups in each pool would contend for 5th through 8th, and so on. Grissom saw 9 of our 13 wrestlers win their pools and advance to the championship brackets. At the end of day one the team was tied for 3 place behind Southside Gadsden and Tuscaloosa County.

Day two was a good day of wrestling for the tigers. By the end of pool wrestling, Grissom had jumped Tuscaloosa County and closed the gap on Southside. Going into the medal finals Grissom trailed Southside by 1/2 of a point. Through out the medal rounds, Grissom faced Southside wrestlers 4 times winning all four face to face matches. Austin Holt defeated Hayden Ryals 10-7, Killian Hoyt defeated Jake Smith 7-4, Ben Bradford pinned Chase Matthews, and Bobby Brown pinned Austin Snyder. Going into our final two matches for the day (Sean Coyne for fifth place and Bobby Brown for first) the team scores were tied between Grissom and Southside. Coyne opened up a lead with a 9-2 decision over Nick Thompson of Mtn Brook. Brown closed things out with a second period pin for first place for himself and the team!

Blackhorse 2010(Posted: 2010-12-03)

Grissom took 17 wrestlers to Blackhorse 2010. All seventeen had first round byes. In the second round, the Tigers were 11-5 and one bye. They recorded 5 pins and 2 majors. The second round was not quite as productive as the Tigers were 5-7 with 2 pins.

The final day of Blackhorse was exciting. The tigers saw 11 members make it to the medal rounds, including 3 finalist. Juniors Hayden Henderson (160#) and Brian Walker (189#) took first place honors. Freshman JD Henderson (103#) took second. Senior Ben Bradford (171#) placed third. Eighth grader Alec Cohen(112#) joined sophomores David Baumohl (140#), Killian Hoyt (152#), and Sean Coyne (215#) in taking home fourth place medals. Freshmen Sam Cannon (130#) and Bobby Brown (285#) placed fifth. Sophomore Austin Holt (119#) finished eighth.

Brian Walker defeated Jeff Lamer of St. Benedict for the championship in an overtime match that was voted Best Match of the tournament by the coaches.

As a team the tigers placed third with 205.5 points behind Christian Brothers (314 pts) and Brother Martin, La (235 pts).

11-30-2010(Posted: 2010-12-02)

The Tigers opened the season with a tri match, hosting Homewood and Scottsboro. Homewood and Scottsboro opened the meet with Scottsboro prevailing 63-18. In the second dual of the night, the Tigers took on the Patriots. The dual got under way with Homewood giving up forfeits at 112, 119, and 125. At 130 and 135 the teams traded pins with Sam Cannon winning for Grissom before David Foster faced what was probably Homewoods most capable grappler. Homewood gave up another forfeit at 140. Grissom then rattled off 3 straight pins starting with Kyle Miller at 145, then Killian Hoyt at 152, and followed by Hayden Henderson at 160. 171 was a back and forth match that saw Jake Griffin go down with a final of 6-12. Grissom bounced back from that loss to score three more pins at 189 (Ben Bradford), 215 (Brian Walker), and 285 (Bobby Browm). The dual ended with the Patriot forfeiting 103.
Grissom 72 - Homewood 9

The third dual of the meet was a battle of the cats as Grissom took on the Wildcats of Scottsboro. Scottsboro jump out to an early lead pinning Trevor Edwards at 119 and taking a 14-4 major decision from Austin Holt at 125. The Wildcats gave up a little of that lead by forfeiting 130. Grissom pulled within one as David Foster took a tough win (9-6) at 135. Scottsboro extended their lead with a pin at 140 and another major at 145. Grissom picked up forfeit points at 152 before going on a 4 pin winning streak. Hayden Henderson at 160, Jake Griffin at 171, Ben Bradford at 189, and Brian Walker at 215 all prevented their matches from going the distance. Scottsboro got a pin of their own at 285 before JD Henderson finished the wrestling for the night with a pin for Grissom at 103. The night ended with Grissom picking up forfeit points at 112.
Grissom 51 - Scottsboro 26

All in all a good opening night for the Tigers in front of a home crowd.

Week of 12-28-2009(Posted: 2009-12-28)

Pelham Duals

On Monday, the Tigers traveled to Pelham for four duals.

First up for Grissom was a tallented Thompson team. Both Grissom and Thompson got 3 pins in the dual. Thompson took a pair of close matches at 145 and 152. Those two matches and the two forfeits Grissom gave up were enough for Thompson to win the dual 43-25.

Benjamin Russell matched our forfeits at 119 and 130 and added another at 215. The Tigers put together a couple of Tech Falls, three pins, and a major taking the dual 53-27.

Pelham started strong, jumping out to a 29-6 lead. The Tigers stormed back with seven straight wins, including six consecutive pins to close the match 45-29.

The Cleburne Co wrestlers were out matched for most of the line up. Other than the two forfeits Grissom was giving up all day, the Tigers only lost one match. The final dual score was 57-18.

South Paulding Duals

Leaving Pelham, the Tigers headed straight to Douglasville GA for the South Paulding Duals. Eight more duals over the next two days.
DAY ONE:
  1. GHS 37 Alexander 35
  2. GHS 34 Henry Co. 34 (plus one to Henry Co on Criteria)
  3. GHS 57 Paulding Co. 22
  4. GHS 38 CASS 34
A brutal day in which the Tigers wrestled really well. The highlight of the day had to be the 189lb match against Alexander. Their coaches informed ours that they had a two time Georgia state champ and double Fargo All American at 171 that want to wrestle our best at either 171 or 189. Coach Henderson asked Gunny if he was up for the match and he said yes. Gunny Hoyt vs Ethan Blackstock!! What a great match. Two aggressive, and confident wrestlers going at it for the full six minutes. After giving up an early takedown on the edge of the mat, Gunny escaped and scored a takedown of his own taking a 3-2 lead in the process. Never trailing after that, Gunny traded points up to the end for a 9-8 win!

DAY TWO:

  1. GHS 39 Roverwood 34
  2. Gordon Lee 48 GHS 27
  3. Woodlawn 46 GHS 36
  4. West Laurence 42 GHS 24
Unbelievably, day two was tougher than day one! The Tigers were not as sharp as they had been the day before. Highlights for the day came in the final match against West Laurence. Trialing 18-0 after 5 matches, Grissom knew they were in trouble as the dual would end with them giving up three forfeits. Two pins, a tech fall, a major, and a win in 5 of the last 6 matches left the dual tied at 24 each before the three forfeits were added. Matches of note for the Tigers were Dexter Thompson at 285 and Alec Cohen at 103. Dexter wrestled a gutsy match against a heavy weight that took advantage of most of the 285lb weight limit. Dexter was relentless, coming from behind and scoring a late pin! Alec put on a show defeating a scrappy opponent 15-0 in a fast paced, action filled match.

Warhorse Duals 2009(Posted: 2009-12-22)

The Tigers traveled to the Black Mountains of North Carolina to participate in the Warhorse Duals hosted by Charles B. Owens Highschool. Grissom was 5 and 2 with wins over host Owens (43-23), Tuscola (47-22), Buncombe County (48-29), Bishop (43-32), and Roberson (37-37 won on criteria). Leading the Tigers were seniors Jake DiPietro and Gunny Hoyt who both went undefeated. Also, strong for Grissom were Adam Blackeyes (4-1), Sam Cannon (4-1), and Brian Walker (3-1).

Week of 12-14-2009(Posted: 2009-12-14)

Scottsboro Dual

The Scottsboro Wildcats hosted Grissom on Monday night. In the Cat Fight, Grissom came up just short falling to Scottsboro 39-33. Lots of JV and Freshman/Middle school wrestling going on as well. Grissom got pins from JD Henderson, Sam Cannon, both the Hoyts, and Christian Rowan. There was drama in the 152 lbs match when Adam Blackeyes was rendered unconcious and had to injury default the match.

Bob Jones Dual

On Tuesday, the Tigers traveled over to Madison to take on the Patriots. Bob Jones showed strong wrestling through most of their line-up, besting Grissom 38-25. The Patriots took the first for matches to build a 15 point dual lead. The Tigers responded with wins at 171, 189, and 215 to tie the dual at 15. Grissom traded a pin and a major against two wins for Bob Jones and led going into 125 lb match 25-21. From there it was all Bob Jones with a pin at 125, an injury default at 130, and a tech fall at 135.
A tough week for the tigers. That was 7 duals in 4 days. Grissom gets some much needed rest this week as the varsity won't wrestle again until we head to North Carolina next week!

Tullahoma Duals 2009(Posted: 2009-12-12)

Grissom were 35 and 27 with 24 wins comming by pin as individuals.

Tigers Second in Tullahoma Duals

A long day in Tullahoma produced great results. The Tiger's won four out of five duals on the day. The Tiger's first match was against a very strong Franklin team. Franklin jumped out to a large 24-6 lead before the Tigers came roaring back to win the dual 34-31. Winning with pins against Franklin were Killian Hoyt (140), Sean Coyne (189), Brian Walker (215), JD Henderson (103). Also picking up wins were Andrew Singer (16-3 at 171), Christian Rowan (8-4 at 285), and Sam Cannon (10-2 at 119). The match was tied at 31 each going into the last match. Sam Cannon Dominate from start to finish to clinch the dual for the Tigers. GREAT JOB, Guys.

Neither Glenncliff (63-14) nor St. Benedict's (57-16) were much of a challenge for Grissom. The tigers accepted 7 forfeits, as well as earning 4 pins, from Glenncliff. Grissom then chewed through St. Benedict's on the strength of 7 pins (Killian Hoyt at 140, Jake DiPietro at 145, Dexter Thompson at 215, Christian Rowan at 285, JD Henderson at 103, Sam Cannon at 119, and Zach Bullock at 130). The highlight of the match had to be Jake DiPietro earning a pin against an opponent that had beaten him the week before in the Blackhorse consolation finals.

The semi-finals match with the Houston Mustangs was a great match. Things got started with an exhibition match featuring seventh grade terror, Alec Cohen. Cohen ripped apart the Houston offering, pinning him in the first period. Grissom led the Mustangs throughout a match that was marred only by poor officiating. For better or worse, the calls were bad both ways and ultimately did not affect the out come. The Tigers defeated five Houston wrestles by pin and picked up one major decision as well as two wins, including a gutsy 7-6 victory at 171 by Andrew Singer.

The finals match against Tullahoma did not go well from beginning to end. The dual opened with a controversial call that prevented Adam Blackeyes from scoring what would have been decisive back points if not a pin. It seemed the Tigers could never recover their balance after that, giving up pins and close matches. With a win at 135, Tullahoma put the match out of reach and, frustratingly forfeited the final to matches to Grissom rather than wrestle them.

All in all a good day of wrestling for Grissom, even if it did end in frustration. The boys looked good all day. Of special note were the young Tigers. The underclassmen, led by Sam Cannon, were outstanding.

Blackhorse 2009!(Posted: 2009-12-04)

The tigers went 42 and 33 in the tournament with 26 wins coming by pin.
