On Monday, the Tigers traveled to Pelham for four duals.
First up for Grissom was a tallented Thompson team. Both Grissom and
Thompson got 3 pins in the dual. Thompson took a pair of close matches at 145 and 152. Those two matches and the two forfeits Grissom gave up were enough
for Thompson to win the dual 43-25.
Benjamin Russell matched our forfeits at 119 and 130 and added another at 215. The Tigers put together a couple of
Tech Falls, three pins, and a major taking the dual 53-27.
Pelham started strong, jumping out to a 29-6 lead. The Tigers stormed back with seven straight wins, including
six consecutive pins to close the match 45-29.
The Cleburne Co wrestlers were out matched for most of the line up. Other than the two forfeits Grissom was giving up all day, the Tigers only lost one match.
The final dual score was 57-18.
South Paulding Duals
Leaving Pelham, the Tigers headed straight to Douglasville GA for the South Paulding Duals. Eight more duals over the next two days.
DAY ONE:
GHS 37 Alexander 35
GHS 34 Henry Co. 34 (plus one to Henry Co on Criteria)
GHS 57 Paulding Co. 22
GHS 38 CASS 34
A brutal day in which the Tigers wrestled really well. The highlight of the day had to be the 189lb match against Alexander. Their coaches informed ours
that they had a two time Georgia state champ and double Fargo All American at 171 that want to wrestle our best at either 171 or 189. Coach Henderson asked Gunny
if he was up for the match and he said yes. Gunny Hoyt vs Ethan Blackstock!! What a great match. Two aggressive, and confident wrestlers going at it for the full six minutes.
After giving up an early takedown on the edge of the mat, Gunny escaped and scored a takedown of his own taking a 3-2 lead in the process. Never trailing after that, Gunny traded
points up to the end for a 9-8 win!
DAY TWO:
GHS 39 Roverwood 34
Gordon Lee 48 GHS 27
Woodlawn 46 GHS 36
West Laurence 42 GHS 24
Unbelievably, day two was tougher than day one! The Tigers were not as sharp as they had been the day before. Highlights for the day came in the final match
against West Laurence. Trialing 18-0 after 5 matches, Grissom knew they were in trouble as the dual would end with them giving up three forfeits. Two pins, a
tech fall, a major, and a win in 5 of the last 6 matches left the dual tied at 24 each before the three forfeits were added. Matches of note for the Tigers were Dexter Thompson at 285
and Alec Cohen at 103. Dexter wrestled a gutsy match against a heavy weight that took advantage of most of the 285lb weight limit. Dexter was relentless, coming from
behind and scoring a late pin! Alec put on a show defeating a scrappy opponent 15-0 in a fast paced, action filled match.
Warhorse Duals
The Tigers traveled to the Black Mountains of North Carolina to participate in the Warhorse Duals hosted by Charles B. Owens Highschool.
Grissom was 5 and 2 with wins over host Owens (43-23), Tuscola (47-22), Buncombe County (48-29), Bishop (43-32), and Roberson (37-37 won on criteria).
Leading the Tigers were seniors Jake DiPietro and Gunny Hoyt who both went undefeated. Also, strong for Grissom were Adam Blackeyes (4-1), Sam Cannon (4-1), and Brian Walker (3-1).
Scottsboro Dual
The Scottsboro Wildcats hosted Grissom on Monday night. In the Cat Fight, Grissom came up just short falling to Scottsboro 39-33. Lots of
JV and Freshman/Middle school wrestling going on as well. Grissom got pins from JD Henderson, Sam Cannon, both the Hoyts, and Christian Rowan. There was drama in the 152 lbs
match when Adam Blackeyes was rendered unconcious and had to injury default the match.
Bob Jones Dual
On Tuesday, the Tigers traveled over to Madison to take on the Patriots. Bob Jones showed strong wrestling through most of their line-up, besting Grissom 38-25. The Patriots
took the first for matches to build a 15 point dual lead. The Tigers responded with wins at 171, 189, and 215 to tie the dual at 15. Grissom traded a pin and a major against
two wins for Bob Jones and led going into 125 lb match 25-21. From there it was all Bob Jones with a pin at 125, an injury default at 130, and a tech fall at 135.
A tough week for the tigers. That was 7 duals in 4 days. Grissom gets some much needed rest this week as the varsity won't wrestle again until we head to North Carolina next week!
Tullahoma Duals
Grissom were 35 and 27 with 24 wins comming by pin as individuals.
Tigers Second in Tullahoma Duals
A long day in Tullahoma produced great results. The Tiger's won four out of five duals on the day. The Tiger's first match was against a very strong Franklin team. Franklin jumped out to a large 24-6 lead before the Tigers came roaring back to win the dual 34-31. Winning with pins against Franklin were Killian Hoyt (140), Sean Coyne (189), Brian Walker (215), JD Henderson (103). Also picking up wins were Andrew Singer (16-3 at 171), Christian Rowan (8-4 at 285), and Sam Cannon (10-2 at 119). The match was tied at 31 each going into the last match. Sam Cannon Dominate from start to finish to clinch the dual for the Tigers. GREAT JOB, Guys.
Neither Glenncliff (63-14) nor St. Benedict's (57-16) were much of a challenge for Grissom. The tigers accepted 7 forfeits, as well as earning 4 pins, from Glenncliff. Grissom then chewed through St. Benedict's on the strength of 7 pins (Killian Hoyt at 140, Jake DiPietro at 145, Dexter Thompson at 215, Christian Rowan at 285, JD Henderson at 103, Sam Cannon at 119, and Zach Bullock at 130). The highlight of the match had to be Jake DiPietro earning a pin against an opponent that had beaten him the week before in the Blackhorse consolation finals.
The semi-finals match with the Houston Mustangs was a great match. Things got start with an exhibition match featuring seventh grade terror, Alec Cohen. Cohen ripped apart the Houston offering, pinning him in the first period. Grissom lead the Mustangs throughout a match that was marred only by poor officiating. For better or worse, the calls were bad both ways and ultimately did not affect the out come. The Tigers defeated five Houston wrestles by pin and picked up one major decision as well as two wins, including a gutsy 7-6 victory at 171 by Andrew Singer.
The finals match against Tullahoma did not go well from beginning to end. The dual opened with a controversial call that prevented Adam Blackeyes from scoring what would have been decisive back points if not a pin. It seemed the Tigers could never recover their balance after that, giving up pins and close matches. With a win at 135, Tullahoma put the match out of reach and, frustratingly forfeited the final to match to Grissom rather than wrestle them.
All in all a good day of wrestling for Grissom, even if it did end in frustration. The boys looked good all day. Of special note were the young Tigers. The underclassmen, led by Sam Cannon, were outstanding.
Blackhorse!
The tigers went 42 and 33 in the tournament with 26 wins coming by pin.
